With a population of 3.5 million, Costa Rica’s literacy rate is 97 percent. The average educational achievement level is 8th grade. Access to higher education remains limited. The first Methodist Church in Costa Rica was created in 1917 and continues to affiliate closely with The United Methodist Church, although it obtained autonomy in 1973. There are 90 local churches totaling 12,500 in membership. The first elementary and high schools were established in 1921, and the theological seminary was founded in 1989. In 2003, Methodist University was established.
