Sixteen million people call Chile home. Recently, the country has experienced economic stagnation and a profound higher education crisis. While the majority of residents identify as Catholic, Protestants and Evangelicals account for approximately 15 percent of the population. The Methodist Church has been present in Chile since the 1870s and is recognized as a provider of high-quality education. A recent earthquake, however, affected many Methodist-related institutions.
